ThumbnailYes, another 'Dennis Brain' model Alexander!

This one is in literally as-new condition, lacquered and in yellow brass with a fixed bell. It comes with a hard, Alexander crocodile case which is also in excellent condition, AND a detachable F/A(+) extension (also in as-new condition and lacquered, but not pictured here).

I won't go on any further about these wonderful horns here - if you want to know more, please read the remarks accompanying references 1553 and 1596.

And - contrary to some people's expectations - this horn plays every bit as well as the earlier models and better than many of 'em. It's a peach!

ThumbnailThis is a standard, yellow brass Alex 103 in good condition for its age: circa 15 years. It’s lacquered (quite a bit of lacquer wear) with a fixed bell.

Alexander horns are noted for being inconsistent. Indeed, many players speak of going to the Mainz showroom and playing 10 or more allegedly identical horns but not finding two alike! This instrument falls into the ‘good’ category and plays extremely well.

Nothing special about it: just a good, nice-blowing 103.

ThumbnailA used dual bore Paxman - this is unusual!

In lacquered yellow brass with a detachable flare and a large bell. You can read about Paxman's dual bore system elsewhere on this site (or email me and I'll send you info direct) so I won't say much more here. Suffice it to say that these horns are just exquisite to play.

This one is in very good - but not perfect - condition and comes in a flat, hard, black Paxman case.

ThumbnailAnother standard Alexander 103 - the German manufacturer's best-selling, flagship full F/Bb double horn.

This is an older model - much preferred by many players - without a bell plaque; the horn is made from yellow brass which still has around 75% of its original lacquer and, although there is evidence of dent removal work around the underside of the bell tail, this horn is nevertheless in very good general condition.

Playing-wise, it's just lovely: unusually free-blowing for a 103, with a delightful mid-range legato facility, it's got a secure, slotted high register and makes that classic Alex sound throughout. Wear and tear is minimal, although there are some surface scratches and blemishes.

Overall a decent, lovely-playing horn.

Alexander single Bb/A(+) - old & tatty but plays superbly! PDF Print E-mail

ThumbnailHere we have yet another example of Alexander's famous single Bb/A(+) instrument. This is the model with the smaller main tuning slide.

I'm afraid this horn is pretty tatty - as you can hopefully see from the picture - and has a lot of missing lacquer; that which remains is discoloured and there are a good few blemishes - small dings and scratches - which all go to produce this 'distressed' look! That said, the horn plays superbly - valve compression is fine, the valves move quickly and smoothly and all slides move freely. Playing-wise this horn is much better than it looks.

If you want a cheap, high quality single horn, this one could be for you...

ThumbnailPaxman's famous, best-selling full F/Bb double horn, the Model 20, is used by amateurs and professionals alike, all over the world.

This particular horn has a medium bell - so it makes that perky, 'European' sound - and the flare is detachable. The horn is lacquered - although there is a fair amount of lacquer wear - and generally in good condition although there are some superficial blemishes. However, playing-wise, it's in perfect condition and will make some lucky player very happy - it's a joy to play with its notchy, secure high register and free-blowing middle and lower registers. And because of its slightly imperfect appearance, it's not megabux...

ThumbnailYou don't often come across these: this is an Alexander Model 102 F/Bb compensator from around 1970 (I'm guessing). It's a pre-bell plaque model - and many players prefer these older instruments, feeling that they're sweeter playing - and it's in great condition playing-wise. However, as you can see from the pic, it is slightly cosmetically challenged. But this is superficial stuff only - the fabric of the instrument is perfectly intact.

It plays really nicely - with a warmer than usual sound for an Alex - and of course it's beautifully lightweight.

A professional standard comp.

Gold brass Paxman 'pre-Model 20L' in as-new condition - Wow! PDF Print E-mail

ThumbnailYes, yet another Paxman 'pre-Model 20L'! But this one's in unlacquered gold brass and it's hardly been played - it's in as-new condition. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe my eyes. I dismantled it for its recon and there was absolutely no calcification inside, the solid brass valves were still in their yellow, untarnished state and there wasn't even any detritus inside the leadpipe! It's like a new pin, even though it's at least 30 years old.

As I've explained elsewhere on this site, these 'prototype' Paxmans were 100% handmade, and are even better made than the later and very fine production-line instruments. They're 'over-engineered' in the very best sense - the metal is of a slightly thicker gauge than on the later horns, and everything has a 'belt-and-braces' feel to it.

This wonderful horn is fitted with a large, detachable bell. It plays just sensationally - like the best Paxman you've ever played in your life, only better - a lot better!

Go and find another one of these for sale - or don't...

ThumbnailAlexander's famous flagship instrument, for many players the ultimate horn. This fine example is in superb condition with hardly any flaws. It's made in lacquered gold brass with very little lacquer wear. The bell flare is detachable and it comes with a volcano-shaped 'Marcus Bonna style' case in black, also in excellent condition. A duck's foot and adjustable pinky hook have been fitted.

These are rare on the used market, gentlemen - in fact, they're rare on the new market since it takes well over a year to get one out of Alexander and they cost an absolute fortune! But this one is here, now, and available...

Paxman single F alto with in-built Bb extension and stopping valve - again, wow!!! PDF Print E-mail

Go and find another one of these - or don't!

This is a specialist high register instrument, designed exclusively for repertoire such as the high horn parts of Bach and Handel. To maximise its usefulness it also encorporates an in-built Bb extension and a stopping valve. The Bb extension is to give a good, warm-sounding top F and G, 3rd space C and 1st space F.

It's fitted with a large bell (to warm up the somewhat harsh sound of the F alto horn) and is made in lacquered nickel-silver. It's lost a good bit of its lacquer but is in otherwise excellent condition. It was made in 1965 and originally cost £172 pounds, 3 shillings and nine pence! (We have the original invoice, which will come with the horn.) Needless to say, it'll cost you a little more than that now!

It's a fine, pedigree instrument, 100% handmade and quite unique. And, of course, it plays superbly...

ThumbnailAnother very rare instrument - a Paxman Model 60 descant horn in Bb and Bb soprano. It's fitted with an A(+) valve and a New World bell so it makes a dark, warm, 8D-like sound. Manufactured in lacquered nickel-silver, it's in excellent condition throughout and has retained most of its lacquer.

The Model 60 is a made-to-order only instrument, and not many have been made (under 1000 in total, I believe). This one comes from the early days at Paxman and will have been made either in the 1960s or 1970s, when Paxman horns were 100% handmade.

It's a specialist horn, obviously, but can also be used as a main, day to day instrument with a 'secret weapon' for the high register! It plays sublimely - a very fine playing horn.

ThumbnailThis is an early post-85 Paxman Model 40M full double descant horn in lacquered yellow brass (lacquer 95% intact) and having a fixed bell. Professionally used by the same player throughout its life, it's in excellent condition with just a few superficial, trivial cosmetic blemishes.

It comes, fully reconditioned and with a full 3-year guarantee, in a hard, black Paxman case which is also in excellent condition.

ThumbnailRecently arrived is this lovely Alex full triple. It's the older model - the 307 - and these are preferred by many players. It's in lacquered yellow brass with a screw bell, lacquer maybe 90% intact. If you're looking at buying one of these you'll know all about it, so I won't go on about it here. Suffice it to say that these wonderful horns aren't so sought-after for nothing, and this one plays like it's from heaven.

In superb condition, it comes in its original flat, crocodile effect case which is also in great condition.
